Social Problems Of Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, And Mental...

The presentations I have viewed throughout the last few weeks in class have given me a whole new understanding of different social problems. The variety of social problems presented introduced me to a couple of social problems I had not given much thought to before. It also surprised me that every person in the class knew at least one person that had been affected by a certain social problem. Through the solutions presented in these presentations, I have gained knowledge of I can personally help eliminate some aspects of different social problems. The three presentations I believed to be the most intriguing were on the social problems of alcoholism, drug addiction, and mental illness. The first presentation was focused on how†¦show more content†¦The second presentation discussed the issues that are influenced by drug addiction. The presentation by Y.C. was titled: â€Å"Living with an Addiction†. Addiction plays a role in driving under the influence, stress, and ab use. The interviewee in this presentation was named Bernard and Bernard was the interviewers father. Bernard is unemployed and has been actively using drugs for over twenty years. He described drug using to just be something to do in his leisure time. Y.C. described her father’s remorse for not playing a bigger role in her childhood and blamed this lack of effort due to his drug addiction. Y.C. understand now that drug addiction took her father away from her. Since then, Bernard has reached out for help and Y.C. helped Bernard get into a rehab program. This presentation displayed how deeply drug addiction can affect family relationships, but that there are solutions to overcoming drug addiction which I believe is useful to learn in a social problems class. The last presentation focused on how mental illness can affect people especially veterans. This presentation discussed how depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can lead to divorce, homelessness, and suicide. The in terviewer, K.L. interviewed a United States Veteran by the name of Jones. Jones contained PTSD and depression after two wars he was deployed in. Study of a Contemporary leader When sitting down and thinking about a leader that I wanted to write about, and eventually stand up in front of people and talk about was a lot harder of a thing to do than I originally thought. There are so many different types of leaders that people follow and are drawn to, for so many different reasons. Whether those reasons follow a certain beliefs like that of cults and religions, or if they simply follow leaders because they were just born with all of the necessary skills and attributes that helps them relate to people, everyone follows a certain type of leader because of their own personal reasons. This leads me to why I chose my leader to talk about in this paper. But even still, only standing at 5’11 as a sophomore Michael Jordan did not make varsity and had to play on the junior varsity team. This drove him to work even harder because he was fully confident that he could play with the older kids. Every single day after his normal basketball practice, Michael would go home and worked on his game even more, day in and day out. This drive and determination helped him get on the varsity team the next two years. He went on to average 25 points a game his junior and senior year at Laney High School in North Carolina. Michael’s senior year he received the nomination to play in the McDonalds All American Team. Also during his senior season Michael was offered a full ride scholarship by North Carolinas coach Dean Smith to play for the Tar Heels. With Jordan having such a competitive edge, motivation, charisma, and drive he was able to become the most important player on their team, and a strong leader for the players around him. Answers: Giving Hope To Families In Palliative Care And Implication For Practice 1: Summary Palliative care is a modern approach. It improves the quality of life of patients and their families for life-threatening illness. At the very first palliative care is applicable in the course of illness. Death in our society is viewed generally with anxiety and discomfort. Especially in case of children palliative care is very important. The main challenges of nurse are to take care of a dying child. The aim of the palliative care is essential to help children for life threatening illness. Hope is defined as a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. Hope plays a vital role in helping overcome the grief for the patient and also to the family of a dying child. Depression is caused by hopelessness. The parent who know that their child will die soon, are losing their hope. But it should not be discouraged by nurses because it does not mean that the child or the family is in denial of the inevitable prognosis. Honest and open communication is needed. The discu ssion is important with the families and client at the time of diagnosis so that they can face the real situation and make a better realistic decision for a palliative care. If the family of a child permits preservation of hope, undoubtedly the way of communicating affects the family of a child. A doctor may also suggest having some hope for the ill child. It can provide the family with comfort in terms of the uncertain future. Hope is the main thing for a family of a patient who are preparing for death. 2: 1. Palliative care for child is closely related to the adult but their needs are very different. Palliative care of child describes total care of body, mind and spirit for the child (de Lima, 2012). It is vital to give support to the family of a child. Stress, pain and symptoms are focused for a pediatric palliative care. The aim is to evaluate the quality of life for both the family and the child (O'Shea and Bennett Kanarek, 2013). A team of doctors provide the pediatric palliative care. The complexity in illness of a child is more than the adults. Because of the different anatomy and physiology the same illness acts differently 2. The challenges are: The family of a pediatric care patient should give support to the patient as long as it is required. Also plays a vital and main role for improvement of the condition of patient. The family should maintain the advice of the expert. The family should have knowledge about the illness and also the symptoms. The family should be able to manage the immediate condition if any abnormality is observed in the patient. It is clear that the patient does not long to live but it is not informed to the patient.3. Considering the case study 1, it is clear that the patient does not have much time left but the family still appear hopeful. Expectation, feeling and desire for a certain thing are together called hope (Bergstraesser, 2013). It has some positive and negative aspect for encouraging hope. The positive aspect is that the family is not giving up and still they have faith for the patient to cure (Ostendorf, 2015). And the negative point is that the family is not acceptin g the real and present situation. Answer: Introduction Harrods is a reputed brand in the market for British, services, luxury, sensation and innovation. They have realized that employees plays an important role in creating the brand value for the organization and hence the survey was conducted to see the employee engagement and the motivation levels of the employees and after that the managers created strategic plans to improve the employee engagement and trust within the systems. 1a) Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility stands for the accountability or the ownership of owns work and taking the responsibility of the work one is doing and not blaming other for it in case something goes wrong. In case of Harrods, it has been observed that there are few benefits of taking personal responsibility like it makes relationships healthier, the people who take more personal responsibility are more social in nature. The research shows that the management of Harrods builds the trust for an employee within the organization. People can depend on each other, be more trusted and respected. Personal accountability also saves the money and time, people who takes the responsibility speaks up and looks solution to the problems (Eshleman, 2009). 1b) Responsibility and performance objectives Keeping customer as a priority is one of the responsibility and performance goal of Harrods. In the organization of Harrods, the employees are the ones who interact with the customers and they create the brand value. Hence, these objectives will help in building a better brand. More efficient and error free operations of work should be another objective in which each task should be delivered by the employees smoothly without any disruption and error(Woolfolk, Doris, Brianna, John,2008) The employees within the organization of Harrods are also honest and at the same time authentic enough to share their information. The employees within the organization who have been working hard and in a diligent manner have been provided more incentives and the discount facilities. Evaluation of effectiveness of objectives Evaluation of performance is another important task Harrods. The employees within the organization not only set the designs and the goals but at the same time also make the proper evaluation of the goals. Without evaluation of performance, the direction of a job is lot and more time and cost is spent. The management of the organization has engaged themselves in making the proper evaluation of the present and the future forecasts. The steps can be used to measure the effectiveness of objectives: Introduction to program evaluation: The Company introduces the system of evaluation within the organization and with its employees. This is done so that all the employees can be able to understand the process in a proper way. Using evaluation method: Evaluation method is very important because based on this only the correct result will be out, hence choosing the right evaluation method is very crucial. Funding evaluation efforts: Cost is involved in terms of human resources and logistics, which will be required to conduct the process of evaluation and the company, should incur the right cost on the same. 1c) Developing employees skills Having good employees, skills are very important in business world to beat the competition and grow the business. Those organization who have employees with better skills are more competitive and profitable because its employees only who are working to achieve the organizational objective. He proposed this theory in 1940Maslow believed that there are different stages of life that people moved through and have five needs that motivate their behavior. He called these needsphysiological, love, safety and esteem, social and self-actualization. Self-actualization: This category is about achieving your potential, excelling in your life and personal achievement. The advantage of this theory is that it provides a summary of human needs and helps to focus on a specific need shared by the target audience whereas the disadvantage of this theory is that it is cultural bound and lacks empirical support for the rank ordering of the needs (Boris, Kopczynski, 2013). 2A) Solution to work based problems Work based issue are very common these days that may arises due to culture, hieratical structure, top management, policies and other factors. Therefore, to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization as a whole the management of Harrods has undertaken some of the steps so that the employees can be motivated in every sphere Transparent communication: Transparent communication is mandatory and it is everyones concerns. As per the need and the type of stakeholder, the right form of communication can be chosen (Patrick, Bruce, 2000). Barriers of communication: There common barriers of communication are mentioned below: Use of Jargon or complicated terminology. Emotional taboos and barriers where people feel it is difficult to express their feelings. Difference in viewpoint and the perception. Physical disability such as speech difficulty and hearing problems Physical barrier for non- verbal communication, unable to understand gestures, body language, non- verbal cues (Derek, Laura, Stephen, 2004). Measures to overcome the communication barrier Clarity of ideas: The communicators should have clear idea that what they are communicating with each other. Understand the need of receiver: Both the parties should know what is the need of the receiver, what he or she is looking for and which mode of communication will be suitable for the receiver and accordingly plan the communication. Each organization has both informal and formal groups where managers encourage in effective building of team. The groups are so made that focuses towards accomplishment of the common goals and corporate goals. It is the responsibility of the team manager and the teammates of Harrods to initially identify the purpose of the entire team that is aligned with the missions, objectives and goals of the organization. The team agenda need to be clarified so that it can be measurable according to the resources of the team members. It also helps in understanding the business of Harrods in a better way, weaknesses can be addressed easily, opportunities can be capitalized on time, knowing the threats and taking the advantages of the strengths, it helps in making the business goals and the strategies that helps in achieving these goals (Koch, 2000). Brainstorming refers to the process to generate the solutions and creative ideas through intensive and free group discussion. Everyone in Harrods is free to participate and share his or her ideas aloud. They are free to make the proper analysis, discuss or criticize the ideas and in the end, they can evaluate the same. It helps in generating a lot of idea at one point of time, it is very much easy to teach and learn, it comparatively easy to prepare and moderate, a lot of material is not required a simple pen and paper helps, idea formation collectively and it saves a lot of time (Fifer, 2010). 4b) Problem solving strategies It is important to resolve the issues in the organization, if some problem arises the detailed analysis should be done and the problem should be overcome rather than sitting on the problem and looking for the solution to come.
